Meet Donna Cady, a CTE teacher at Edwards Middle School. She teaches Exploring Careers and Employment Grades 6th - 8th grade. Ms. Cady finds joy in witnessing students of all ability levels succeed and uncover hidden potential within themselves. Her classroom transforms into a College and Career Ready Lab, immersing students in real-world, hands-on learning experiences. Daily, you'll encounter a bustling hub of young professionals, engaged in activities like suturing wounds, caring for infants, disassembling two-stroke motors, and designing in CAD (Computer Aided Drafting). It's an orchestrated "controlled chaos," fostering cooperative, self-paced learning. Her journey as a teacher began in her childhood dreams, where her first students were her stuffed animals, her supportive mother, and anyone she could persuade to participate. The influence of her third-grade teacher, Susan Davis, confirmed her calling in education. Ms. Cady thrives in meeting students exactly where they are and guiding them through exploration, growth, and newfound confidence in their future careers. With twenty-five years of teaching experience, she often encounters her former students while out and about. Her enduring impact is evident as one of her past students became a nurse aide, providing care to Ms. Cady's mother during her hospital stay. The students from her initial "real class" are now in their mid-thirties, with some entrusting their children to Ms. Cady's guidance. Her students have achieved remarkable success, spanning advanced degrees, prestigious positions, thriving trades, and productive citizenship—all while cherishing their experiences in her class. Donna's advice to students is to pursue a career they are passionate about, understanding that each journey is unique and embracing differences. She encourages them to leverage the incredible opportunities offered through Career and Technical Education to build connections with their teachers, who are professionals in their respective fields, offering invaluable experience, knowledge, and contacts. Ultimately, Donna encourages students to find a career they love and are passionate about and to give it their all. #CTE

NCPS school psychologists are uniquely qualified school team members who strive to support both students and staff. Our psychologists each serve multiple schools, as well as are valued participants on many district-level teams. They wear many hats and have a broad range of expertise, including data collection and analysis, assessment practices, program evaluation, academic and behavioral intervention strategies, mental health supports, consultation and collaboration efforts, crisis intervention and recovery, social-emotional learning, and school-family-community connectedness. NCPS school psychologists work tirelessly every day to improve the academic achievement, positive behavior, social-emotional skills, and mental health of our students! The National Association of School Psychologists’ theme for this week is “Let’s Grow Together,” inspired by the importance of both personal and shared growth in supporting the well-being and learning of students. This week, you can grow in your own way by setting a goal for yourself, asking others for support to achieve your goal, and reflecting on your progress towards your decided goal. Meet Northern Nash High School CTE Student, Raven Whitaker I have chosen to pursue Marketing Management as my academic path. I made this choice because I have a strong interest in understanding the dynamics of both sports and non-sport events. Additionally, I wanted to learn the essential criteria for running a successful business. This program has had a significant impact on my personal growth, teaching me to think creatively and aim for excellence in all my endeavors. I believe that this program will pave the way for my future success, as it equips me with valuable business skills that I can rely on as a backup plan and for potential job opportunities in Corporate America. #CTE #CareerDevelopmentMonth #NCPS #NashCountyPublicSchools #NCPSchools #Careeer #StudentSpotlight

Meet Southern Nash High School CTE student Hadley Pridgen I am enrolled in the Agricultural Education pathway of Animal Science II-Food Animal Honors for my Fall 2023-2024 school year. I am continuing my education in Animal Science from Animal Science I (Fall 2022-2023). I chose Agricultural Education as the Southern Nash community is united in its roots, as well as being encouraged by my father, Jason Pridgen, as he is a farmer in our community. I joined in my freshman year and was enticed by the active lifestyle this pathway asks for its participants, as one must be dedicated and determined to succeed in not just class but in agriculture. The additional benefit of automatically being a member of the FFA was also key. I loved competing in Extemporaneous Public Speaking and being a chapter officer to help the community that gave so much to me. This program has impacted me personally as it has shown me the hardships that some people endure to prosper in life, whether growing plants or handling livestock. This Agricultural Pathway has improved my patience and overall maturity, as I have realized that things will never be given to you and that you must work to achieve your goals. The social and personal connections this program gave to me will never be forgotten. I have formed bonds with other students that I would have never forged if not for my Ag classes. This program will further assist me in life by improving my leadership skills and education in the most diverse field that is agriculture. This pathway will set me up for many relationships that will prove crucial in the upcoming years of my life. #CTE #CareerDevelopmentMonth #NCPS #NashCPSchools #ncpschools #NCPSProud #CareerTechnicalEducation

As we kick off CTE Career Development Month this November, we’re spotlighting our CTE staff. Check out what Mrs. Sharron Barnes, CTE Computer Engineering Technology Teacher had to say! The highlight of my career as a teacher was when I had the opportunity to see struggling students make significant breakthroughs in learning. I worked closely with these students, provided extra support, and witnessed their confidence and academic performance improve dramatically in the class. Computer Engineering Technology allows students to explore the IT field from a hardware/software perspective. Students in this program have been provided an opportunity to work at the student Tech Helpdesk, which is a paid internship/stipend throughout the year, including the summer. This program allows students to learn about customer service skills and IT repairs. This course at NNHS serves as a segment to many pathways students can explore and possibly continue their education—for example, networking, cybersecurity, programming, etc. I was motivated to become a teacher by my passion for helping others learn and grow. I have always liked sharing knowledge and supporting kids. This passion has greatly influenced my teaching approach. I love to create engaging and inclusive learning environments and tailor lessons to real-life scenarios to which students can relate. Over the last 4 years, there have been many, but I am most proud of seeing an increase in certification rates for the class. I am also proud that NNHS has been highlighted by the North Carolina Business Committee for Education (NCBCE) as one of the premier Student Tech Helpdesk. This accolade is now affording other opportunities within the IT field in the upcoming year. More to come! Advice for students: There are many pathways that you can take. Start early by exploring your options in middle school. When you get to high school, you'll know what you like and thrive in your classes. Stay tuned for more interviews with our CTE teachers and students during CTE Career Development Month!
