Nash County Public Schools Celebrates Cultural Day: A Day of Thanksgiving

By: Heather Louise Finch

Nash County Public Schools (NCPS) observed Cultural Day this summer, underscoring the district's dedication to cultivating an inclusive and diverse learning environment. Esteemed guests, international teachers, and educators from various backgrounds gathered in June to commemorate this special occasion.

The event commenced with a grand Procession of Flags featuring international teachers proudly carrying their respective nations' flags. The audience respectfully stood as talented international teachers performed the national anthems of the United States, Colombia, the Philippines, and Honduras.

Engaging presentations and performances showcased the vibrant cultural heritage of different countries. Attendees were captivated by Mr. Christian Solano-Veloza's heartfelt rendition of "La Malaguena," representing Colombia, showcasing the international teachers' dedication and talent.

Sylvia M. Anthony-McGeachy, Ed.D., Director of Beginning Teachers at NCPS, emphasized the significance of experiencing cultural diversity, stating, "Sometimes, we lack exposure to the world and the opportunity to share cultures, hindering inclusivity. By removing cultural barriers, we enhance communication and establish connections that allow others to invite us into their world."

The event also featured Ms. Riezel Lirazan performing the popular karaoke song "Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin" from the Philippines and the Filipino international teachers showcasing the traditional folk dance "Pandanggo sa Ilaw."

Dr. Edmundo Delos Santos, Jr., expressed gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to the administrators and board, saying, "Their presence and support hold immense value for us." He acknowledged the international teachers' efforts in fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.

The celebration concluded with a community singing session led by Ms. Michelle Siao, Mr. Lymben Glenn Comecilla, and Ms. Love Lei Davenport, who inspired attendees with a heartwarming rendition of "A Million Dreams." The event culminated in a community dance, "We are All in This Together," with Mr. Almirante leading.

"As educators, we are united in our mission to shape the dreams and aspirations of the children we serve," said Superintendent Dr. Steven Ellis. "This event allowed us to unite and celebrate our shared commitment to education and cultural exchange."

The festivities concluded with a delightful array of food from the featured countries, offering attendees an opportunity for networking and further engagement.

NCPS extends gratitude to all participants, guests, and supporters who contributed to the resounding success of Cultural Day. The district remains steadfast in its commitment to enriching the educational experiences of its students through inclusive programs. By celebrating its teachers and cultural initiatives, NCPS continues to shape the dreams and aspirations of the children it serves, preparing them for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
