Nash County, N.C. - Now in its second year, the WIN Academy continues to offer unique and exciting opportunities for recent high school graduates of Nash County Public Schools (NCPS). This three-week educational initiative is specifically designed for the nearly 30% of Nash County students who have yet to clearly define their post-graduation plans. Seventeen students from all four high schools in NCPS are currently participating in the second annual cohort, which commenced on June 3, 2024, at Nash Community College. These students will undergo comprehensive training, take part in immersive tours, and benefit from direct mentorship and coaching, all leading up to interviews with local businesses and potential job offers.
A district spokesperson emphasized the program's role in providing a clear and confident path forward for students who do not intend to pursue college or military service. They said, "This program is not just an opportunity, it's a distinct and reassuring path forward for these students, who often harbor uncertainties about their future."
As of early 2024, the United States continues to grapple with a significant job shortage. With approximately 8.5 million job openings and only 6.5 million unemployed workers available to fill these roles, the labor market is revealing a conspicuous and substantial gap, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This shortfall affects diverse industries across nearly every state, presenting considerable hiring obstacles for businesses nationwide.
The WIN Academy is committed to addressing the gap in career readiness by focusing on developing skills that are highly valued by businesses. Through structured guidance, practical exposure, and direct mentorship from industry practitioners, the program equips students with the skills and confidence to navigate the job market. This initiative not only readies them for immediate employment but also nurtures long-term career growth, positioning them favorably for future endeavors.
High school seniors are nominated by educators or counselors for participation. Licensed high school instructors deliver career readiness skills, while local business leaders acquaint students with job opportunities that align with the county's geography. Additionally, students embark on facility tours to gain firsthand experience in varied work environments.
"We're showcasing to students all that Nash County has to offer," said Chad Thompson, Executive Director of CTE and Workforce Development at NCPS.
The WIN Academy curriculum emphasizes attributes prized by business leaders, including dependability, punctuality, eagerness to learn, goal setting, time management, and conflict resolution. Each program day focuses on one of these traits, prompting students to delve deeply into their career aspirations. Furthermore, students engage in career readiness exercises such as crafting resumes and cover letters, dressing suitably for diverse work settings, and participating in simulated interviews.
Upon program completion, students who fulfill the requirements and graduate high school are guaranteed job interviews. As the initiative advances, it is anticipated that participating businesses will sponsor these students for advanced degrees, nurturing future leaders within their organizations.
Board Chairwoman Dr. LaShawnda Washington praised the program's local impact, asserting, "By furnishing local education and job opportunities, we ensure their success within the community. This fosters a stable workforce and a flourishing populace, enhancing the area's economic well-being."
