FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Join NCPS Students for Oral History Day at the Country Doctor Museum May 16

BAILEY, N.C. — The Country Doctor Museum, in collaboration with Southern Nash High School's Advanced Placement U.S. History class, will host its fifth annual Oral History Day on Thursday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to Noon. The event will feature students interviewing local residents about their experiences with communicable diseases and vaccines.

The initiative aims to capture personal stories from community members who have endured illnesses such as measles, mumps, and polio before vaccines were widely available. Some participants will also share memories of receiving the polio vaccine, a significant and much-celebrated advancement in public health.

Museum Director Annie Anderson encourages local residents to participate. “Please join us to share your story with the high school students. It’s a wonderful opportunity for inter-generational learning, as well as to discover how individuals and communities responded to illness and health hardships. We look forward to hearing these experiences and preserving them for the future.”

Interviews will be conducted by students and recorded, with all materials preserved by East Carolina University’s Laupus Health Sciences Library. These recordings will ensure that the personal recollections contribute to the historical record.

Founded in 1967 and now managed under the Collections and Historical Services Department of ECU’s Laupus Health Sciences Library, the Country Doctor Museum honors the legacy of rural medical practitioners and aims to educate the public about their vital contributions. Interview sessions are scheduled every 20 minutes throughout the day at the museum, located at 7089 Peele Road, Bailey, N.C., 27807.
