ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Nash County Public Schools (NCPS) is pleased to announce the upcoming construction of a state-of-the-art field house to cater to the needs of all outdoor athletes at Northern Nash High School (NNHS). This project aims to enhance athletic facilities for all athletes, highlighting NCPS's commitment to providing exceptional student-athlete opportunities.
NNHS, the only high school in the NCPS system needing an up-to-date field house, recognizes the significance of creating a versatile space to accommodate various sports activities. A previous renovation in 2012 focused solely on football and did not increase the square footage.
During a recent Nash Board of Education meeting, a motion was presented by Franklin Lamm and seconded by Vice-Chair Lank Dunton to approve the bid and execute the contract for the Northern Nash field house. The motion passed with a majority vote of 6-3.
"We are excited about the approval of the Northern Nash field house project," says Angie Miller, Executive Director of Athletics, School Nutrition, and Wellness. "This facility will provide our student-athletes a top-notch space to train, compete, and develop as individuals. It demonstrates our commitment to offering equal opportunities for all athletes while fostering a sense of excellence within our community."
The bidding process for the field house project was facilitated by Oakley Collier Architects, with the bid opening held on May 30, 2023, at the NCPS auditorium. After careful evaluation, the construction contract was awarded to Berry Building Group, whose bid emerged as the most advantageous option.
The financing for this transformative project involves multiple sources. Nash County has committed $3 million toward the field house construction, underscoring the community's dedication to supporting educational initiatives. Additionally, approximately $1.2 million will be generated by selling properties and a grant project, securing additional funds. The remaining balance of around $500,000 will be covered by the Capital fund, exemplifying the responsible financial planning of the project.
Preparations are underway for the groundbreaking ceremony, anticipated to occur by the end of September 2023. While a specific date is yet to be confirmed, the construction team is diligently working to ensure completion by the end of the 2024 football season, provided all necessary information and contracts are obtained within the 60-day timeline from the bid opening.
This momentous endeavor is a testament to the dedication of NNHS, NCPS, and Nash County to fostering athletic excellence and providing equitable opportunities for all students. The construction of the Northern Nash field house will enhance the overall sporting experience and contribute to the holistic development of our student-athletes.
