Good evening Red Oak Family! Here are a few important announcements: Please pay all outstanding lunch fees as soon as possible. All families must "opt-in" using the following link to the new model release form. This will allow your student to be in the yearbook, have their accomplishments be posted to social media/newspaper, etc. Please complete this using the attached link link as soon as possible. All students will take the second North Carolina Reading Check-in tomorrow. All 8th graders will take the North Carolina Science Check-in on Wednesday. 8th grade students will receive a letter Tuesday regarding Advanced Placement courses at the High School. There will also be and information session on February 1st and the Nash County Public Schools Central Office auditorium. In athletics: Basketball has away games this week at Nash Central Tuesday and at Phillips Thursday. Wrestling has a home match vs. Nash Central Tuesday. Please make your attendance and grades a priority for the second semester. The promotion/retention standards are very clear and there will be letters coming home soon for students at-risk of failing for the year. There is still time to turn things around, but make no mistake, the promotion/retention standards will be followed and the results are up to the students. Make the decision and peak to your child today about their performance. Also, if you need access to the parent portal, please call the school.

The most recent federal data show that in the 2020-21 school year, at least 14.7 million students nationwide were chronically absent. This means that chronic absence has almost doubled from the more than 8 million students, pre-Covid-19, who were missing so many days of school that they were academically at risk. Chronic absence — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences, and suspensions—can translate into students having difficulty learning to read by the third grade, achieving in middle school, and graduating from high school.
