IB Admission Process

Incoming Freshmen

  • An application for enrollment is not required.

  • Students and Parents must complete and sign a "Declaration of Intent" and submit to the RMHS IB Diploma Program Coordinator upon registration. 

  • Successful IB Diploma students typically have grades above 80% in 8th grade and are prepared for the rigor of honors courses in 9th grade.

  • It is recommended  and strongly encouraged that upon completing 8th grade students have:

    • Passed Math 1 

    • Grades above 80% and/or can demonstrate proficiency with EOG scores. 

    • Students who have not completed Math 1 in 8th grade will need to complete Math 1 and 2 during the freshmen year and forfeit the electiveAny student who did not complete Math 1 in 8th grade is strongly recommended to enroll in Math Foundations over the summer.  This is a virtual course offered on Edmentum.  Your middle school counselor will need to enroll you prior to the end of the school year.

  • Students from public middle schools within Nash County Schools need only apply for a transfer if Rocky Mount High School would not otherwise be the high school you would attend. It is recommended these students go through the counselor at their middle school.   Contact the IB Coordinator if you need assistance with obtaining paperwork.  

  • Student academic performance is closely monitored during 9th and 10th grade.  Students who are struggling in honors coursework will be counseled before officially starting the Diploma Programme in 11th grade.

  • The IB Coordinator visits Nash County middle schools in the fall semester to meet with prospective students and parents.  Interested students and parents are encouraged to attend these meetings to learn more about the program expectations, requirements, and to ask questions.

Transfer Students

  • Students who enter or enroll in 10th grader or higher must have satisfied all course requirements for the previous grades (i.e. 9, 10, 11) with grades of As and Bs. 

    • Course requirements for 9th grade:  Honors English 1, honors Math 2, Honors World History, honors Earth & Env. Science, Health and P.E., World Language (Spanish or French) 1 and 2, one elective. 

    • Course requirements for 10th grade:   Honors English 2, honors Math 3, Honors pre-Cal, Honors Civics & Econ., Honors Bio 1, Honors Chemistry 1, World Language (Spanish or French) 3 and 4

  • Course requirements for 11th, year one of the Diploma program: courses from previous school must be compatible with the course offerings at RMHS. 

  • Students and Parents must complete and sign a "Declaration of Intent" and submit to the RMHS IB Diploma Program Coordinator upon registration. 

Residence outside Rocky Mount High School district lines

  • Students who are enrolled in the IB program but would otherwise attend a different high school in Nash County based upon your home address are required to t complete the "Student Transfer Request" form and the "Athletic Waiver." Both forms are required and can be located on the Nash County Schools website under "Parent Resources." These forms should be submitted to Central Office or the IB Diploma Program Coordinator at RMHS.  The transfer request must be made annually if you continue to reside outside of the Rocky Mount High School district lines.

Student entering from private schools, home school, or other districts

  • Students new to Nash County Public Schools will not be formally enrolled at RMHS or in the IB Diploma Program until after July 1, and only after the official enrollment package has been completed and transcripts reviewed.

  • Students entering from neighboring counties on a tuition basis may be required to seek a release from their current school system.   Students living outside of Nash County will be assessed a tuition fee.  Please contact Nash County Schools Central Office for specific details on current tuition rates for out of county students.

  • It is highly recommended that students new to Nash County Schools or public schools meet with the IB Diploma Program Coordinator to determine suitability for the program.  Parent and student meetings are always welcomed. 

Transportation

At this time, NCPS does not provide bus transportation for students who reside outside of the Rocky Mount High School district lines.
